You may have seen on TV or online that GLP-1 medications like Monjaro are now being offered through GPs.
We understand this has caused some confusion, so we’d like to explain what’s actually happening in Newham.
Is Monjaro Available from My GP in Newham?
❌ No – it is not available directly from your GP.
The NHS in Newham (ICB) has not commissioned Monjaro for general prescribing through GP practices.
Can I Still Get Access to it?
✅ Possibly – through a special referral pathway.
If you meet very strict medical criteria, your GP can refer you to a service called Oviva, which is privately run but funded by the NHS.
👉 Please note:
-
Your GP practice only makes the referral
-
The Oviva team will assess you and decide if the medication is suitable
-
Your GP is not involved in that part of the process
What Is the Eligibility Criteria?
To be referred, you must:
-
Have a BMI of 40 or above,
or 37.5 or above if you are from a minority ethnic background
AND
-
Have four out of five of the following conditions:
If you do not meet these strict criteria, we are unfortunately unable to refer you to this programme.
How Do I Ask for a Referral?
If you believe you meet the criteria above, please contact the practice.
Our team will review your medical records and, if suitable, complete the referral form via EMIS (our clinical system).
Please Be Patient and Understanding
We know many patients are interested in this new treatment.
We kindly ask that you understand:
-
This is not a service we control
-
The referral pathway is limited and based on medical need
-
We are doing our best to support those who qualify
